A Website No No
By Daye Salander

How many times do you go to a website and mutter “Wow” under your breath and wish that your website was that cool?  More than once, I’m sure.  So what’s wrong with it?

First, let me say that it depends on the end user of your website.  If it is basically for current clients and prospective clients that you have already been in contact with and they have your web address, then, you should be fine.  On the other hand, if your website is to draw business, then…you have a problem.

These websites are created in flash and although they can have a lot of “wow” to them, the search engines have a huge problem with them.

In layman terms, search engines send out what is called a spider or a crawler and it goes out there in the virtual world and crawls around websites.  It reads things such as the web address as well as meta tags and also the written word on the page.  These web pages are then catalogued and rated and are what you find when you do a search in a search engine such as Google.

If a website is flash based, the crawlers cannot read the written word or follow the links within the website.  It sees the first page of your website along with the title and the description along with key words listed in the meta tags, but that is it.  Thus any chances of your website making it to the first several pages of any search engine are dashed.

So, before having a totally flash based website done, consider your end user and the purpose of your website before proceeding.
